Yea, Kimie!! I voted for your video and sent the link to some friends so they could vote as well. Hope you win! You'll be a great vet! Don't let anyone tell you you're not smart enough! My mother told me that when I was in school and that's why I'm not a doctor. I wish I had never listened to her! Good Luck!

Great suggestions guys! I have a couple favorite repurposed items too. My grandmother's old writing desk is in my entry hall as well. It's the perfect size, and the two drawers, though shallow, are great for keys, sunglasses and Netflix envelopes.

On top of the desk, I keep a large crystal vase for the mail as it comes in the door. It's the kind of glass piece that was collecting dust in the closet, now I get to enjoy it every day. When it gets too full for one more piece, I know it's time to sit down and sort through it. Under the desk is an antique coal bucket for paper recyclables. The handle on the pail, makes it easy to carry out to the curbside bin.

Another favorite repurposed use I saw in a Martha mag a decade ago. I keep the bathroom drawers organized with dozens of white porcelain cups and pots I collected from a trip to Goodwill. Ranging from butter pots to coffee mugs to sake cups, my only rule is that each one is white. The varying sizes, heights and shapes accommodates safety pins, hair clips, lip sticks and cotton balls. A little ball of earthquake wax keeps the pots from sliding around and tipping over when the drawers are opened and closed.

Keep up the goodwork!

SUCH fabulous ideas! Thanks for posting these...I'll be sure to refer my clients to your site for on-going helpful hints. We all know that what you are referring to here is what makes home "feel" good!

As a single mom of 3, staying on top of the kids' stuff coming and going is an extra challenge. Having the systems set up as you describe, and then TRAINING them on the expectations of how to use them, has also helped us maintain our elbow room. Also cuts down on the stressful transitions of coming and going when there are deadlines to meet.

Yancy asked where to get such a wall organizer that you mentioned...

I've always had good luck at Storables and of course at Target. For a beautiful, custom-made bulletin board, key shelf, catch-everything-paper-dispenser, check out http://www.xomonline.com/Objects.html. We also have some of xom's objects for sale in the SPACE Design Center.

Thanks again for helping us keep our homes feeling supportive of our lives!

Thanks Annie!
You always have great ideas, and I always put them to use.
Recently I started using a large wicker laundry type basket as my "in" box for Michael's business stuff. It's big enough to fit my stapler, tape, deposit books, and all of the invoices, mail and misc. sundries that go with bookkeeping. When the "boss" has something for me to do, he can drop it in the big basket. Once I get a chance to work on his stuff, I have everything I need in one place.

These are great tips and most are ones that I use with my clients as well. Something to think about at your "in & out" station is to have a recycling bin so when you open the mail you can quickly get rid of what you don't need. May also want to have a "charging station" to keep track of your cell phone, camera, PDA - that way you always know where they are and keep them charged.
