Moving With Pets?

When you move, Fido and Fluffy move, too!

• Bathroom habits may need additional attention and coaching in the new space.

• Residual scents from prior residents may upset some pets – watch for signs of:
> territoriality (spraying/marking)
> fear (hiding under beds, behind boxes, heavy panting)
> curiosity (digging, whimpering, pacing)

• If your pet has any fear of certain people, consider the moving crew. Maybe pack and move day are good times for a visit to the doggie day care. My personal favorite in the Seattle area is the Barking Lounge.

• Keep a familiar scented bed or blanket easily accessible. And, of course, a favorite toy or two!

• As you pack your overnight bag for move day – pack Fido’s, as well. Food, medicine, brush, etc.

• If moving to far to stay with your current vet, identify a new vet before your move and keep their number and address easily at hand.

• Make it a priority to update microchips and ID tags. More pets go missing during household moves than any other time!

• Be patient with any weird or needy behavior. They sense change, and yet have no real idea what is going on. They just need reassurance that you love them and are not leaving them behind!
